Hathersage Befrienders

Who are we?

Hathersage Befrienders was established in 2015 with the aim of relieving the isolation of vulnerable or elderly people in the area of Hathersage parish by establishing, maintaining and developing a visiting, befriending service to provide social contact and support. Today we are here to support people of all ages and abilities in the Hathersage area. No one has to be lonely in Hathersage.

Run entirely by volunteers, Hathersage Befrienders are advised and partially funded by Derbyshire Dales Council for Voluntary Services as well as being generously supported by numerous local groups.

All visitor friends are DBS checked and the befriending service is provided free of charge.

What is befriending?

Befriending is an informal relationship where a volunteer friend gives one-to-one support and encouragement to another person/friend who may feel socially isolated or is at risk of becoming isolated.

The truth is we ALL need friends and support. Human contact is essential for us to survive and thrive. Connection and social interaction are important for our emotional, mental and even physical well-being.

Loneliness causes activity in the same parts of the brain that register physical pain whilst friendship ignites the part of the brain that makes us feel good.

Pre-pandemic records showed that around at least 1/3 of us were affected by loneliness from time to time and for a wide variety of reasons. Today the figures are even higher after nationwide and worldwide periods of enforced isolation. It’s often a hard feeling to acknowledge and it can be a struggle, at any age, to form friendships and connect with people.

Anyone of any age or ability is welcome to contact Hathersage Befrienders; so whether elderly or a teen, a parent, single or partnered - if you (or someone you know) are struggling day to day with feelings of loneliness or isolation, perhaps we can help?

We have a great team of volunteers, who (regulations permitting!) visit Hathersage residents in their homes, accompany members to local events or take them out for a walk or short trip, to build valuable and long-lasting friendships, providing support and a listening ear. A bit of caring company and a chat can make a huge difference to someone’s life. Perhaps yours too?
